Denmark has announced that construction of the world’s longest underwater tunnel, which will reach Germany, will begin on January 1, 2021, AFP reported.
Work on Fehmarnbelt, a 10-minute link to cars and trains, has started on the Danish island of Loland, the Danish Ministry of Transport said.
The almost 18 km long underwater tunnel will connect the Danish region of Loland-Falster with Schleswig-Holstein in Germany.
The link will be a new portal to Europe and a new path to future green transport solutions, “said Transport Minister Benny Engelbrecht.
The tunnel, which will be operational in mid-2029, will allow Denmark to reach Denmark in 10 minutes by car and 7 minutes by train instead of one hour by ferry.
